Prior to the re-development of Thomond Park the Stadium had a capacity of approximately 13,000.
At the start of 2006, the Munster Branch of the IRFU announced plans to expand the stadium to 25,600. In May 2006, Munster Rugby unveiled the design for the new look Thomond Park. In order to accommodate the new design, 16 houses running adjacent to the stadium needed to be purchased. After some slight delays the houses were purchased and knocked. That allowed building work commenced on the stadium in early March 2007.
The Stadium took 20 months to construct from start to finish, and Munster played their first match here on October 4th 2008 against Glasgow.
The North and South Terraces were left untouched after the re-development, while two new stands (West and East) were built either side of the pitch.
The two stands offer a seating capacity of 15,600 while the combined terrace capacity is 10,000. The East Stand contains the Main Reception, Museum, Dressing Rooms and all Corporate Facilities including executive boxes and conference suites. The West Stand contains the Dressing Rooms, and the Supporters Club Bar. The cost of the project was estimated at €40 million.
